### Math

Math is often called the language of science because it is ingrained in scientific-based careers – doctors, engineers, astronauts, researchers, to name a few -- all use a significant amount of math in their professions.

But the application of math is much broader than that.  We use it regularly in our day-to-day activities.  Whether we’re cooking (measurements), shopping (money/percentages), balancing our budget, or estimating our driving distance, math surrounds us.  Essentially, math is the language of the world!

It also is instrumental in helping your child develop skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, and logic.  So, it is vital that your child knows and understands math.

Math comprehension – beyond the answers:

At Coachland, we aren’t interested in the student simply coming up with the right answer.  We make sure that your child understands HOW to solve the problem.  It’s the same concept as that old proverb of teaching a man to fish.  Knowing the formula and technique will give your child the ability to solve multiple problems, not just one specific math problem.

Every child has his or her own way of learning.  Sometimes writing out the steps is useful.  Other times, kids need a visual example to understand the concept.  Whatever the technique that works best for your child, Coachland will find it and implement it.

Taming the Common Core Monster:

Common Core is dominating math in schools, often exploring the idea that there is more than one way to find a solution to a math problem. With Common Core, it’s less about the solution and more about the process. Coachland will help your child find the best way to understand the process so that the student can apply it to subsequent problems. Common Core math requires a different way of thinking which can make it frustrating for the parents to help their child, since it is very different than the way they were taught in school. However, Coachland is well-versed in Common Core math and can guide your child through the tricky methods and different processes of problem-solving. Our goal is to help your kids conquer the “math monster” by building confidence in their math skills, lowering the intimidation factor, and finding the fun side of math.
